A volcano quiet for over 12,000 years has erupted again. Hayli Gubbi, a shield volcano in Ethiopia’s Afar Region, produced an ash plume rising to 14 km on 23 November 2025. Satellite data also detected a large release of SO₂ into the atmosphere. Nearby impacts included ashfall in villages such as Afdera, temporary disruptions for herders and grazing lands, and stranded tourists in the Danakil Desert. No casualties have been reported.
